Towards Net Zero: Whole-House Energy Retrofits, Swansea

Swansea, United Kingdom, Europe

Completed · Residential · Social Housing Retrofit Programme · Temperate · 2022

A collaborative retrofit of energy-inefficient social homes off the mains gas grid in South and West Wales, led by Cardiff University's Welsh School of Architecture with Swansea Council and Wales & West Housing. Six demonstrator homes combined demand reduction, renewable supply and battery storage. Post-retrofit net operational carbon fell to 197 kgCO2e per year from 3,312 kgCO2e, and the approach is designed to be replicable at scale. Named 2023 CIBSE Building Performance Champion.
