Medellín Metrocable Line H (Picacho)

Medellín, Colombia, South America

Completed · Transport · Urban Aerial Cable Car · Tropical · 2016

Line H extended Medellín's urban cable car network into the Picacho hillside neighbourhood, providing metro-integrated mass transit to a district inaccessible by conventional rail or bus. The Medellín cable system is globally recognised as the first sustained use of gondola technology as permanent urban mass transit integrated into a fare-paid metro network.

Innovation highlights

  • first city in the world to operate cable cars as permanent metro-fare-integrated mass transit
  • serves 30,000 passengers/day on steep terrain unreachable by rail or BRT
  • station design doubles as community hub with library and public space
  • model replicated in Caracas, La Paz, Bogotá, and Rio
