Lusail Stadium

Lusail, Qatar, Middle East

Completed · Sports · Cooled Open-Air Stadium · Arid · 2021

An 89,000-seat stadium deploying district-scale active cooling through under-seat chilled air supply nozzles to maintain 18–24°C in the seating bowl while outdoor temperatures reach 45°C, making viable a major outdoor event in an arid summer climate. Post-tournament conversion to a community hub with housing, schools, and clinics is built into the structural programme.

Innovation highlights

  • under-seat cooling nozzles delivering 18°C air directly to occupant zone
  • district cooling plant sized to serve surrounding Lusail urban district post-event
  • convertible stadium structure designed for residential and civic reprogramming
  • bowl geometry optimised via CFD to contain cooled air and limit infiltration
  • solar shading canopy reduces bowl heat load by 40%
