Low Line — Delancey Street Underground Market

New York City, United States, North America

Concept · Civic · Underground Public Park · Temperate

A proposed underground public park in a disused trolley terminal beneath the Lower East Side of Manhattan, using a solar canopy system to pipe daylight underground via fibre-optic and reflective duct technology to support plant growth. A working prototype demonstrated plant photosynthesis using entirely redirected natural light.

Innovation highlights

  • remote skylighting system channelling solar light underground via optical technology
  • demonstrated photosynthesis in subterranean space using only redirected daylight
  • adaptive reuse of disused trolley terminal with zero new ground disturbance
  • solar collection canopy transferring full-spectrum light through reflective ducts
