Bosco Verticale, Milan

Completed · Residential · Forested Residential Tower · Continental · 2014

Two residential towers (110m and 76m) carrying 900 trees and 20,000 plants on purpose-built cantilevered concrete terraces, each terrace structurally engineered for the long-term soil and wind loads of mature tree growth. The project established a replicable model for urban forest density in vertical form and triggered a global wave of similar proposals.

Innovation highlights

  • cantilevered reinforced concrete terraces engineered for 40-year mature tree load (up to 1,000kg per tree)
  • soil engineering for lightweight retained substrate on structural slabs
  • wind tunnel testing of tree positions to manage turbulence at height
  • 900 trees and 20,000 plants across two towers as functioning urban forest
  • automated irrigation and arborist maintenance system integrated into building management
