Benban Solar Park

Aswan, Egypt, Middle East

Completed · Energy · Utility-Scale Solar PV Park · Arid · 2019

At 1,650 MW installed capacity, Benban is the world's largest solar park at completion, covering 37 km² near Aswan and connecting 41 independent power plants to the Egyptian national grid. The project pioneered a concession model allowing 41 separate IPP contractors to build individual plants on a shared land-allocation and transmission framework.

Innovation highlights

  • 1,650 MW capacity — largest solar park in the world at commissioning
  • 41-IPP concurrent construction model on shared grid infrastructure
  • bifacial panel deployment exploiting high desert albedo for rear-face gain
  • integrated sand drift management earthworks designed for 30-year panel protection
  • replicable concession framework adopted as template for Africa solar roll-out
