It addresses the AEC problem of dead facade area — sections that neither provide daylight nor structural value — by converting them into productive energy assets. Pilkington Sunplus converts dead spandrel area into an electricity-generating envelope component by laminating Solaria PowerVision cells into standard laminated glass panels, targeting the portion of a commercial facade that neither admits daylight nor provides structural function but still carries thermal and weathering loads. The concept is sound — spandrel replacement avoids the roof-space competition and wind-loading penalties of rooftop PV while maintaining facade continuity — and the IEC certification provides at least a baseline quality check. The problem is that nearly ten years post-certification there is no accessible power output specification, no published Wp rating or efficiency figure, and no documented deployed case study in the public domain; performance cannot be independently evaluated by a specifier because the manufacturer has not published the numbers.
