Mycelium-based rigid insulation panels grown on agricultural waste, replacing petroleum foam and mineral wool.
Myceen cultivates mycelium networks on forestry and agricultural residues, then arrests growth via proprietary drying to create rigid composite panels for building thermal envelope use. It addresses embodied carbon and end-of-life disposal burden inherent to petroleum-derived foam and mineral-wool insulation. First real-building deployment occurred at PAKK Pavilion (Tallinn, EKA) in October 2024 with 24-month performance monitoring (U-value, mould risk) ongoing through October 2026.
Myceen grows mycelium networks through agricultural and forestry residues, arrests growth by drying, and produces rigid composite panels intended as a lower-embodied-carbon replacement for petroleum foam and mineral wool insulation. The PAKK Pavilion installation at the Estonian Academy of Arts in October 2024 is the first real-building deployment, with a 24-month monitoring window running through October 2026 — which means the performance data that would justify building-scale specification does not yet exist. Three high-severity issues converge: thermal performance has not been independently verified at scale, fire performance and building-code compliance pathways are unestablished, and long-term hygrothermal durability across climate zones is unvalidated. Supply chain immaturity is an additional practical barrier — production capacity cannot yet support volume procurement, and cost is not competitive with incumbent materials. The genuine value this technology carries is lifecycle: meaningfully lower embodied carbon, biodegradable end-of-life, and a non-toxic manufacturing process are real differentiators if the performance case closes. For a specifier, the honest position is that Myceen warrants tracking closely as the PAKK monitoring data publishes and as fire test results become available, but it is not a material that can be responsibly specified into a building envelope until those two evidence gaps are filled.

Monitoring programme (Oct 2024–Oct 2026) is promising but incomplete; real-world performance under full seasonal/climatic cycles not yet evidenced.
