Dynamic circadian lighting adjusts spectral output and brightness across 24-hour cycles to align residents' sleep–wake patterns with natural circadian biology. It targets sleep consolidation and quality in elderly populations, where age-related circadian dysregulation is prevalent. The system operates as an environmental intervention in care facilities without pharmaceutical or behavioural modification.

The approach is passive and requires no resident compliance, which is a practical advantage in care settings where behavioural interventions are difficult to sustain. The evidence base, however, is the core problem: two prior RCTs found no significant effect; the positive result comes from a single uncontrolled pilot of eight participants in one Jordanian facility, and a 2025 systematic review explicitly characterised the field as methodologically immature — raising serious questions about placebo and Hawthorne effects inflating reported benefit sizes. A specifier considering this for a care home should also weigh that a facility-wide dynamic lighting retrofit requires replacing standard fixed-spectrum luminaires across the building, adding ongoing scheduling and calibration complexity, and a one-size circadian schedule will not accommodate residents with atypical chronotypes or individual sleep histories. The idea has a credible biological rationale and is worth monitoring as larger, controlled trials accumulate; it does not currently have an evidence base that justifies specifying it as an intervention with predictable clinical benefit.

The pilot shows extraordinary effect sizes but lacks a comparator arm, blinding, or control for regression-to-mean, Hawthorne effect, and seasonal/environmental confounds. Critically, two prior controlled studies in similar European care settings (Figueiro et al., Riemersma-van der Lek et al.) found no significant improvement on objectively measured sleep. The 2025 Cochrane/systematic review (implicit from excerpt) explicitly identifies circadian lighting trials as underpowered and contradictory. No real-world deployment data, no cost–benefit analysis, no long-term adherence or maintenance track record. Actigraphy and questionnaire self-report are subject to observer bias and carry-over effects in unblinded designs.
