Miru's electrochromic (EC) coating technology automatically tints windows to modulate solar heat gain and glare, reducing HVAC cooling demand. The product addresses the AEC need for passive dynamic thermal control and occupant comfort in high-glazing facades. Operating via electrical command with no moving parts, it integrates with Glaston's curved glass processing capability to overcome manufacturing yield and cost barriers that previously limited EC window commercialization.
Miru's electrochromic coating modulates solar heat gain and glare by tinting on electrical command, with no mechanical parts and — through the Glaston partnership — compatibility with curved glass that earlier-generation EC products could not accommodate. The problem it addresses is well-established: high-glazing facades generate cooling loads and glare that blinds can only partly solve, and the Glaston partnership offers a credible manufacturing pathway that has eluded competitors. One provided evidence item and a 2028 volume production target put this in early-production rather than lab status, but the critical context is View Inc.'s 2024 bankruptcy, which demonstrated that the electrochromic window market has repeatedly failed to achieve cost and yield at commercial scale; Miru's manufacturing pathway is not yet proven at volume, and no named building installations are publicly available. No independent thermal or optical performance data has been published, so the HVAC load-reduction claims remain unvalidated, and the long-term durability and color stability of the coating under UV and thermal cycling is undocumented. The controls question is also open — whether tinting is manual, scheduled, or sensor-driven affects occupant experience and adoption significantly, and a poorly designed UX will undermine the whole performance case. The technology is worth tracking closely for facades where curvature rules out alternatives, but a specifier should wait for independent test data and at least one independently reported installation before putting it on a project.
Funding, partnership announcement, and prototype size are verifiable from company website and press release (Jan–Mar 2025). Funding sources (Series A Aug 2024, venture debt, Mativ investment) reported by Miru. March 2025 sunroof prototype is cited in title but not independently confirmed. No named building projects, no third-party testing data, no published cost per sq ft, no comparison vs. View or Sage Electrochromics. 'Commercial purchase orders in 2025' is unspecified and unverifiable. 2028 volume target is aspirational. The Glaston partnership is real (Tampere facility is documented) but integration timeline and yield improvement claims are company-stated, not externally audited.
