100% post-consumer recycled aluminium casting ingot for facades with 97% lower embodied carbon.
Hydro CIRCAL 100R is a casting ingot produced from end-of-life window and facade aluminium scrap, designed to replace primary aluminium in facade systems without requiring changes to existing extrusion or fabrication workflows. It addresses embodied carbon intensity in building envelopes—a material bottleneck in decarbonisation—by achieving near-parity performance at dramatically lower lifecycle impact. The material has been validated at scale: 85 tonnes supplied the entire 14,800 m² facade of Innovationsbogen (Augsburg, completed Q4 2023), with ISO 14025/EN 15804+A2 EPD certification and on-demand production across four European cast houses.
CIRCAL 100R is a casting ingot produced from end-of-life window and facade aluminium scrap and designed as a direct drop-in to existing extrusion and fabrication workflows — meaning the structural and visual performance of an aluminium facade system stays unchanged while the embodied carbon of the metal itself falls by 97% versus primary ingot. That figure is independently certified under ISO 14025/EN 15804+A2, which makes it usable in whole-life carbon reporting and green procurement without qualification. The deployment evidence is real if narrow: 85 tonnes of it clad the entire 14,800 m² facade of Innovationsbogen in Augsburg, completed Q4 2023, confirming commercial-scale supply and fabrication compatibility on a single documented project. The constraints to weigh honestly are supply geography and demand pressure — four European cast houses handle production, and supply is bounded by the availability of high-quality post-consumer facade scrap, which is unevenly distributed and potentially competitive as demand grows. The cost structure is undisclosed; there is no published parity comparison with primary aluminium, and whether embodied-carbon premium offsets a price differential is project- and procurement-context dependent. With only one major reference project, long-term performance across diverse climate exposures and non-standard extrusion parameters remains largely extrapolated — the material science is sound, but specifiers outside Europe should confirm local supply routes before making it a project commitment.
Single named building deployment (Innovationsbogen, Augsburg) confirmed via Hydro press release March 2023. EPD verification via DNV to ISO 14025 confirmed. Carbon footprint claim (0.5 kg CO2e/kg) is specific and benchmarked against credible global (17 kg) and EU (6.7 kg) averages; no independent audit of the 99.5% PCR content claim located, but sourcing from end-of-life windows is material-traceable. On-demand availability across four cast houses indicates supply-chain readiness but not yet volume production. Completion status of Innovationsbogen not independently verified beyond Hydro's March 2023 announcement.
