SPEEDWORM is an AI-controlled, peristaltic robot prototype developed by GE Vernova under ARPA-E's GOPHURRS program ($3.7M). It addresses the labor and cost intensity of underground utility trenching by combining soil displacement and conduit deployment in a single pass. The robot uses segmented flexible actuators that mimic earthworm movement to advance through soil while laying electrical conduit, eliminating separate trenching, conduit placement, and backfill cycles.

SPEEDWORM is a GE Vernova prototype funded at $3.7M under ARPA-E's GOPHURRS program that uses peristaltic segmented actuators to advance through soil while simultaneously deploying conduit — consolidating trenching, placement, and backfill into one pass and eliminating the sequential labour cycles that make underground utility work expensive. The ARPA-E backing and program framing give the concept credibility at the funding level, but as of November 2025 the entire validation record is a 50-foot dirt pile in a controlled laboratory: real-world soil variability, compaction, encountering existing buried utilities, and production run lengths of 500 feet or more are all untested. The peristaltic motion that gives the robot its soil-displacement capability is inherently slow, so the efficiency case rests entirely on cycle elimination rather than speed, and performance in cohesionless sands or clay-rich soils is undefined. At this stage the robot is a research prototype whose outcome will depend on field trials that have not yet happened; specifiers on utility corridor projects should follow the ARPA-E program for field validation results before forming any view on deployment timeline.
