Myceen grows mycelium into agricultural residues and sawdust to create lightweight insulation boards. Myceen grows insulation boards from mycelium and agricultural waste — sawdust, coir — and the PAKK Pavilion is running a 24-month live envelope trial to test thermal performance and mould resistance under real northern European conditions, with monitoring running through October 2026. The material proposition is compelling from a circular-economy angle: fully biodegradable end-of-life, locally cultivated feedstock, and a potentially lower embodied-carbon footprint than mineral wool if claims are validated. The critical qualifier is that no independent lambda certification or accredited thermal data has been published; the trial is still in progress and no interim results have been disclosed, so the performance case rests entirely on claimed values. The two most significant barriers to specification are the critical-severity regulatory gap — no declared performance under EN 13823 or equivalent fire and durability standards — and the fundamental mismatch between a claimed 6-to-24-month durability window and the 30-to-50-year design life expected of a building envelope. Hygroscopic behaviour and moisture management detailing requirements also need independent characterisation before this can be used in anything other than a controlled demonstration. Worth monitoring as the trial data emerges; not yet suitable for specification on a live project unless the project is itself structured as a research demonstration.
