Glued-laminated and cross-laminated engineered bamboo structural system for mid-rise occupied buildings.
Ninghai Bamboo Tower demonstrates a prefabricated modular construction approach using engineered bamboo (glulam posts/beams and CLB composite floors) in a 7-storey, 20.3 m occupied building. It addresses the credibility and performance gap in bamboo mid-rise construction by providing a peer-reviewed, real-world proof-of-concept with structural documentation. The system achieves rapid assembly (three floors in two days) through factory-prefabricated modular units.
The Ninghai Bamboo Tower is a seven-storey occupied building using prefabricated glulam bamboo posts and beams with cross-laminated bamboo composite floors, completing three storeys in two days on site and providing peer-reviewed structural documentation published in ASCE — a combination that meaningfully closes the credibility gap that has held engineered bamboo below mid-rise for decades. This is a proof-of-concept, not a market-ready product line: the building exists, the data exists, and the fabrication methodology is documented, but engineered bamboo manufacturing infrastructure is concentrated in Asia, and design teams outside that supply region will face high costs and sourcing uncertainty that quickly undermine the embodied carbon argument. Fire performance data for the glulam system is less developed than for cross-laminated timber, regulatory code pathways are absent in most western jurisdictions, and long-term moisture and biological degradation performance at 20–50 year lifecycle has not been established. For a specifier, Ninghai is most valuable as design evidence — a reference that de-risks engineered bamboo conceptually for projects in regions with bamboo supply chains — rather than a system ready to be specified directly. The framework is replicable; the supply chain is not yet.
Structural design and construction method are peer-reviewed and published (ASCE JSENDH Vol. 152 No. 7, Yan Xiao et al., ZJUI). Building occupancy and award recognition (China Wood and Bamboo Structure Premium Project Gold Award, Nov 2025) are credible. However, no independent third-party data surfaced on: fire performance testing (critical for mid-rise), seismic resilience testing, long-term durability/creep under live load, moisture control in tropical/humid climates, embodied carbon LCA, or comparative whole-life cost. Peer review does not include these performance domains. Single building does not yet constitute 'proven technology' at scale—it is a successful prototype.
