Electrophoretic smart glass film for building façades with voltage-controlled transparency and neutral color in open state.

Eclipse is an electrophoretic light modulator (ELM) film that modulates transparency by migrating charged particles under low voltage, designed for new and retrofit building glazing. It addresses the chromatic distortion problem inherent to electrochromic glass while offering true-neutral appearance when transparent and near-complete opacity when activated. eLstar has demonstrated manufacturing scalability but the product remains pre-deployment in terms of independent field validation and long-term durability.

Eclipse is an electrophoretic light modulator film that migrates charged particles under low voltage to shift glazing between near-transparent and near-opaque states, and its distinguishing claim over electrochromic competitors is a neutral colour appearance in the transparent state — the blue or amber cast that makes EC glass visually uncomfortable on certain buildings is absent here. The retrofit-compatible film format is a practical advantage: it can be applied to existing glazing rather than requiring glass replacement, which opens a much larger addressable market than new-build-only products. The evidence position is entirely manufacturer-demonstrated: zero independent field data, no installed pilots, and no third-party durability testing are on record, which is a critical gap given that electrophoretic systems have a known failure mode in particle settling and electrode degradation over repeated switching cycles — and that failure mode is the one thing a specifier most needs to understand before committing the technology to a facade. The thermal performance impact of the ELM film layer in both transparent and opaque states has not been disclosed, so the energy modelling case cannot be made. Controls integration pathway and cost-benefit relative to motorized blinds are unvalidated. The technology is genuinely differentiated on colour neutrality and retrofit applicability, but until multi-year durability data from an independent field installation exists, the risk profile for any specified project is high.

Reality check

Manufacturing scale-up and funding secured are credible signals of commercial intent. However, the core claims rest on company demonstration only—no third-party field validation, no published switching-speed or durability metrics, no installed reference buildings, and no independent optical or thermal performance testing. The ~2 minute switching time to full transparency is a stated practical limitation that contradicts dynamic façade use cases requiring responsive shading. No evidence of regulatory pathway (building code compliance, fire testing, or UV stability data) has been disclosed.
