Strata SE1 integrates building-mounted wind turbines within an aerodynamically shaped roof crown to address poor renewable energy potential in dense urban environments. The design optimizes wind flow acceleration to the turbines. Post-occupancy data (2010 onwards) showed actual generation of ~50 MWh/year, less than 1% of building demand—substantially below projections—revealing fundamental challenges in rooftop wind performance within sheltered urban settings.
Strata SE1 is one of the most cited BIPV cautionary examples in UK practice: three horizontal-axis turbines integrated into an aerodynamically shaped roof crown on a residential tower in Elephant and Castle, designed to exploit wind acceleration in the inter-tower gap. Post-occupancy monitoring from 2010 onwards recorded actual generation around 50 MWh per year — less than 1% of building demand and substantially below design projections — making it an evidenced case of the gap between wind resource modelling assumptions and the turbulent, sheltered reality of urban rooftop environments. The system is documented as built and operating, which is more evidence than most entries in this category carry; the evidence it provides, however, is cautionary rather than encouraging. The critical-severity con is the negligible energy offset relative to the capital cost, maintenance overhead, vibration transmission, and prime rooftop real estate consumed. For specifiers, the lesson from Strata SE1 is that aerodynamic channelling between buildings is highly site-specific and difficult to model accurately enough to justify turbine capital expenditure; the design projections did not account for actual ambient urban wind patterns, and there is no indication that modelling fidelity has improved sufficiently in comparable projects since. The product is worth knowing as a reference case, not as a specification option.
Independent post-occupancy monitoring confirms ~50 MWh/year generation (Strata's own engineering reports). However, original performance projections not directly cited in accessible sources — severity of underperformance is documented, but pre-build claims require primary source verification. No evidence of maintenance costs, noise impact, structural loads, or long-term durability beyond 2012 publication. Architectural/wind integration intent is well documented; energy outcome is the documented shortfall.
