Candidate systems (FCU, exposed FCU, active and passive chilled beams, displacement, VAV) are scored side by side on comfort, air quality, energy, responsiveness, void depth, maintenance and leakage/condensation risk. The matrix makes the trade-offs explicit so the client can choose with eyes open.
Scoring candidate servicing strategies — fan coil units, exposed FCUs, active and passive chilled beams, displacement ventilation, VAV — against a common set of weighted criteria is the right way to make a system selection visible and defensible, particularly in projects where client, architect and MEP engineer have divergent priorities. The matrix format forces the team to agree on what matters before committing to a system rather than after, and it creates an auditable record of the trade-offs accepted at concept stage. The record carries no provided evidence and sits at claimed, which is consistent with this being a process tool rather than a product. The risk in matrix appraisals is in the criteria weights and scores rather than the format itself: a matrix can be constructed to ratify a preference already held by adjusting weights after the scores are known, and a client who is not shown the sensitivity of the ranking to weighting assumptions has not been genuinely informed. The matrix should present at minimum the scenario where different criteria dominate — comfort-led weighting versus energy-led weighting versus cost-led weighting — so the client chooses an overall direction rather than endorsing a number produced by criteria they did not review. Scores on void depth, maintenance access and condensation risk are worth particular scrutiny: these are the criteria most frequently underweighted at concept stage and most frequently regretted in operation.
