That number solves a specific problem that conventional mineral fibre cannot: the listed building interior, the constrained masonry cavity, the heritage facade where 150 mm of insulation would require structural intervention. Peer-reviewed testing and commercial installations substantiate the thermal performance figure, so the physics is established. The honest trade-off is cost: aerogel is significantly more expensive per m² than conventional insulation, which limits it to those constrained applications rather than open-wall contexts where thicker, cheaper alternatives are structurally possible. Two high-severity cons shape specification risk — moisture sensitivity (performance degrades when wet, making vapour management design critical) and fragility during installation (brittle aerogel composite damaged in handling performs below spec and increases site waste). Supply chain is thin: few manufacturers and a small installer pool mean project programme and procurement risk are genuine, not theoretical. This is the right tool for specific retrofit scenarios where thickness is the binding constraint; using it as a general insulation strategy where the constraint does not apply imports unnecessary cost and handling risk without commensurate benefit.
Aspen Aerogels Spaceloft is a real, commercially available product with published thermal data (λ ≈ 0.015 W/mK). R-value claims (~R-10/inch) are consistent with stated thermal conductivity and verified in peer-reviewed building science literature. Source URL is a retail vendor page (limited technical depth). Deployment is documented in case studies and retrofit projects, but overall market penetration remains niche—estimated at hundreds of installations globally, not thousands. Cost premium (3–5× conventional insulation) is a known market constraint. Long-term durability data (>20 years in-situ) is limited; material is hygroscopic and sensitive to moisture, which is not foregrounded in vendor messaging.
