Heat pumps plus rooftop PV for net-zero operation.
Air source heat pumps provide heating and hot water while rooftop solar PV generates renewable electricity, removing fossil fuels from the homes. Pairing electrified heat with on-site generation balances demand toward net-zero in operation. It complements the very low-energy fabric.
Pairing air source heat pumps with rooftop photovoltaic panels removes gas from the building entirely and creates a plausible pathway to net-zero operation, particularly when combined with the very low heat demand implied by the fabric-first envelope described elsewhere in this project. This is a well-established technology combination in new-build housing — both technologies are commercially mature, and the interaction between high-fabric performance and small heat pump specification is well-modelled in the sector. Evidence state is claimed in the sense that operational performance on this specific scheme is not yet measured, but the underlying technology evidence is substantially stronger than for most claimed solutions. The honest conversation a specifier should have concerns sizing: air source heat pumps perform best when running at low flow temperatures against a highly insulated envelope, and the full benefit depends on the fabric performing as designed — if construction quality slips, the heat pump is undersized for the actual heat load. Rooftop PV generation will not fully offset annual consumption in a UK climate without storage or grid export tariff arrangements, so the net-zero claim should be scrutinised for what accounting boundary it uses. Grid carbon intensity assumptions also matter: net-zero in operation today is not the same as net-zero in 2050 as the grid decarbonises further.
