Burying a sports hall 7m down to fit a tight site.

A full-size sports hall is sunk seven metres below the central courtyard so a large clear-span volume fits a cramped urban school without taking playground space. Going underground exploits the only spare volume on a dense site while keeping outdoor space at grade. The courtyard is reinstated above the buried hall.

Sinking a full-size sports hall seven metres below a school courtyard to recover playground space is a response to an acute urban constraint that would otherwise require either a compromise on sports provision or an above-grade structure that would dominate the available site. The move is structurally and spatially logical — deep basements on urban school sites are not unusual, and sinking a single-level large-span volume rather than a multi-storey structure simplifies the engineering and waterproofing problem — but it is also a significant cost commitment, and evidence state is claimed rather than drawn from comparable cost benchmarks. The genuine value is pedagogical as well as spatial: a school that retains a full-size sports hall without sacrificing outdoor play space is demonstrably better equipped than one that cannot fit both, and the recovered courtyard serves as outdoor teaching and break space simultaneously. The risks to examine before pursuing this approach on a live project include ground conditions — seven metres below an inner-city school site may encounter infrastructure, groundwater or contamination that drives cost materially above estimates — and the ongoing operational cost of ventilating, lighting and conditioning a windowless below-grade volume. Natural light is absent by definition, which has implications for both the sporting environment and the energy balance.
