A heavyweight stone-clad concrete frame is left exposed so it absorbs daytime heat gains and releases them slowly, damping peak temperatures. Thermal mass stabilises the internal environment with little or no mechanical cooling, which suits sensitive archive material.
Exposed heavyweight concrete or masonry absorbs heat during the day and releases it slowly at night, flattening internal temperature peaks without mechanical cooling — a principle with deep roots in vernacular and institutional architecture and well-documented in post-occupancy studies of libraries, galleries and archive buildings. The record here carries no tracked evidence, but the underlying physics are settled and the approach is routinely specified in sensitive-use buildings where stable conditions matter and air conditioning risks are high. For an archive or reading room, the value is clearest when thermal mass can be combined with night purge ventilation, which resets the buffer each night; without night cooling, peak attenuation diminishes over a prolonged hot spell. The honest trade-off is structural: exposed mass often means a concrete or masonry frame rather than a lightweight steel one, which carries programme, cost and acoustic implications that must be resolved early in concept design. Fire strategy, surface finish and integration with services routes are the practical coordination issues most likely to erode the benefit during detailed design if not locked down.
