On-site generation (PV, micro wind), hydrogen fuel cells and battery storage are tied together by a smart microgrid that balances generation, storage and demand. Combined with thermal loops and absorption chillers it lets a development self-supply and shift load, reducing grid carbon and improving resilience.

Coupling on-site generation, hydrogen fuel cells, battery storage and a smart microgrid into an integrated energy system is an ambitious configuration that addresses resilience, carbon and self-sufficiency simultaneously — and those three goals are rarely aligned in practice in the same package. Hydrogen fuel cells for stationary power are operational at commercial scale in data centres and industrial sites, and smart microgrids managing mixed generation sources are deployed in campuses and remote communities, but the fully integrated configuration described here — PV, hydrogen, batteries, thermal loops and absorption chillers under unified control — remains at demonstration-project scale with limited replication. The evidence base on this record is zero, which is consistent with the maturity picture: each component is real, but the integrated system is complex enough that each project is effectively a bespoke engineering exercise rather than a proven deployable package. Green hydrogen economics are currently unfavourable at small scale — electrolysis, storage and fuel-cell round-trip efficiency still make it an expensive energy carrier against battery storage for diurnal shifting — so the hydrogen element deserves particular scrutiny relative to the capital cost. The case is strongest for high-value developments with genuine resilience requirements and a sophisticated facilities management capability; for a standard commercial project, the complexity-to-benefit ratio of the full stack is difficult to justify.
