Design natural/mixed-mode ventilation and verify comfort with CFD and overheating checks.

Buildings are designed to ventilate naturally or in mixed mode, using openings, stack effect and cross-flow, with computational fluid dynamics and overheating analysis (CIBSE TM52/TM59, Part O, BB101) verifying comfort. Reducing reliance on mechanical cooling cuts energy and plant.

Natural and mixed-mode ventilation is a mature design strategy — it removes or reduces mechanical cooling plant, cutting both capital cost and operational carbon — but its delivery is more sensitive to design quality and building operation than fully mechanical systems, and the gap between modelled and as-built performance is consistently larger than for conventional HVAC. CFD modelling and overheating analysis to CIBSE TM52/TM59 and Part O have become standard verification steps on buildings with natural or mixed-mode ventilation strategies, which is progress; the challenge is that CFD models of buoyancy-driven ventilation are highly sensitive to opening configurations, occupant behaviour and weather patterns that the design team cannot fully control. This record carries no evidenced deployments, but the approach is common enough in UK design practice that the evidence gap is a cataloguing absence rather than a maturity concern. Climate change overheating risk is the most significant live threat to the strategy: TM59 assessments using 2050 weather files increasingly show natural ventilation schemes failing in urban bedrooms and south-facing offices under plausible future conditions, prompting designs that were natural at planning to add mechanical top-up, partially undermining the original brief. Specify the resilience limit explicitly — at what external temperature does the mixed-mode mechanical component engage — and model against future climate weather files before committing the strategy at RIBA Stage 2.
