Openable-facade natural ventilation plus perimeter heat.
Dwellings are ventilated naturally through openable facades with perimeter heating for fabric losses, avoiding mechanical ventilation energy where air quality and acoustics allow. It is the leanest residential approach and suits well-insulated, moderately exposed sites.
This is the oldest residential ventilation strategy: openable facades let cross-ventilation do the air quality work, while perimeter heating — typically low-temperature radiators or underfloor beneath exposed glazing — compensates for fabric heat loss at the envelope. It strips out the heat recovery unit, ductwork, filters, fans and associated maintenance that mechanical systems demand, making it the leanest whole-life approach when site conditions allow. The honest constraint is that those conditions are exacting: the approach is viable on well-insulated, moderately exposed sites where external noise and air quality sit within acceptable thresholds, and where occupant-controlled window opening can be trusted to happen. Evidence here is claimed rather than demonstrated — no deployments or measured performance data sit behind this record — so a specifier should reach for actual post-occupancy studies or monitored reference schemes before using it as the primary strategy on a project where acoustic or air quality exposure is non-trivial. The potential is real on the right brief — notably urban low-rise in temperate climates with good acoustic separation — but the decision gate is a site-specific feasibility check, not a default assumption that natural ventilation always costs nothing.
