Convective chilled beams, separate fresh-air system.
Passive chilled beams cool by natural convection over a chilled coil while a separate system handles fresh air, giving the quietest operation and high efficiency with no terminal fans. They suit cellular and comfort-critical offices, again needing condensation control.
Passive chilled beams cool purely by natural convection — room air rises over the chilled coil by buoyancy, cools and falls — with ventilation handled entirely by a separate central system, making them the quietest terminal cooling option available and inherently free of local moving parts or noise sources. This suits acoustic-critical environments such as cellular offices, meeting rooms and healthcare spaces where fan noise from FCUs or induction from active beams would be problematic. The trade-off against active beams is cooling capacity: without induction the convective heat transfer rate is lower, which means passive beams need more ceiling area to handle a given load, and they become impractical in high-internal-gain spaces or dense occupancy. Condensation control is the same constraint as for active beams and requires the same engineering discipline on water temperature and dehumidification strategy. No deployment evidence is on record here, though passive chilled beams are a mature product with a broad commercial base; the value of naming them in this context is as a comparator in a cooling-system options study rather than as an emergent technology.
