Ultra-thin aerogel boards achieving ~0.015 W/m·K for constrained retrofit and listed building compliance.

Spacetherm and Spaceloft are rigid aerogel insulation boards manufactured to BS EN 13162/13163, with thermal conductivity approximately half that of conventional PIR (~0.023 W/m·K). They address the retrofit challenge of meeting Part L 2025 U-value targets (0.30 W/m²K for solid walls) within severe depth constraints, particularly in heritage and listed buildings where internal cavity space is minimal. Deployed as thin-layer internal or external retrofit layers to existing masonry.

Spacetherm and Spaceloft aerogel boards achieve thermal conductivity of approximately 0.015 W/m·K — roughly half that of PIR — enabling solid-wall U-value targets of 0.30 W/m²K to be met in under 100 mm of insulation depth, which is the critical performance parameter for heritage and listed buildings where both internal cavity space and external elevation character are constrained. Third-party certification to BS EN 13162/13163 provides a regulatory anchor that the A1 aerogel blanket product in this same batch currently lacks, and there is documented deployment in UK Part L heritage compliance contexts. The cost barrier is real and rated high-severity: aerogel boards run 3–4 times the cost of PIR or EPS per unit area, which effectively restricts the addressable market to projects where the retrofit geometry constraint is severe and the conservation obligation is non-negotiable — mainstream volume retrofit at this price point is not viable. Aerogel's brittleness generates dust during cutting and handling, requiring site discipline and protective measures that are not routine in standard insulation installation, and the specialist installer knowledge needed is unevenly distributed across UK regions. Vapour permeability and moisture sensitivity demand careful membrane detailing that adds design complexity relative to foam board systems. Long-term field performance data in UK external conditions — thermal cycling, moisture cycling, freeze-thaw — is still accumulating. The case for aerogel boards on heritage retrofit is well made when depth genuinely cannot accommodate conventional insulation; outside that constraint, the cost premium needs to be justified against the specific Part L target on a project-by-project basis.

Heritage retrofit case studies exist but are not comprehensively catalogued in peer-reviewed sources. Cost-performance trade-offs, moisture sensitivity, and long-term durability in UK climate are not yet independently validated at scale.
