Specify low-GWP refrigerants to cut the climate impact of cooling plant.

Refrigerant choice dominates the embodied-carbon and leakage impact of cooling plant: R410a carries a global-warming potential around 2,088 kgCO2e/kg versus 1,430 for R134a, and lower-GWP options far below that. Specifying low-GWP refrigerants and minimising charge cuts both upfront and operational climate impact of HVAC.

Refrigerant choice is disproportionately consequential in building carbon accounting: a fully charged cooling system using R410a can carry an embodied warming potential equivalent to several years of the building's operational energy, and a single large leak during maintenance can erase a decade of energy efficiency gains. Specifying refrigerants with substantially lower global-warming potentials — such as R32, R1234yf or natural refrigerants like CO2 or propane where equipment is available — addresses this at the point where it is cheapest to act, the equipment specification stage. This record is at claimed status with no project-specific evidence, though the comparative GWP data cited (R410a at 2,088 vs R134a at 1,430) is factually grounded in published IPCC values, and lower-GWP alternatives are commercially available in most product categories. The regulatory context matters: F-Gas regulations in the UK and EU are progressively tightening, which means R410a systems specified today may face servicing restrictions before end of life — an operational risk that makes low-GWP specification a defensive commercial decision as well as an environmental one. The trade-offs to assess are equipment availability and servicing infrastructure: lower-GWP refrigerants such as A2L category hydrofluoroolefins require compatible compressors and pipework, and some natural refrigerants carry flammability classifications that add safety and plant-room design requirements. Confirm that the intended refrigerant is supported by the equipment manufacturer's current product range and that local servicing engineers hold the required handling certifications before specifying.
