Friction pendulum isolators (FPIs) are bearings that sit between foundation and superstructure, allowing controlled lateral sliding on concave surfaces during seismic events. They address earthquake damage by converting ground motion into gravitational potential energy and dissipating it as heat through friction, keeping the primary structure elastic. Hundreds of buildings in high-seismic regions (Japan, California, Chile, New Zealand) use them; documented post-earthquake inspections show minimal structural repair claims.

Friction pendulum isolators decouple the superstructure from ground motion at source — bearings between foundation and frame let the building slide on concave surfaces, keeping the primary structure elastic through major events.
