Participatory workshops shaping the design with users.

The architects ran workshops with students, teachers and locals to shape the brief and spaces around the community's real needs before designing. Participatory design improves fit, ownership and wellbeing in the finished building. The method is transferable to any social-infrastructure project.

Running participatory workshops with students, teachers and local residents before the design brief is fixed is a well-supported approach to improving programme fit and long-term building use — and in social-infrastructure projects the gap between what designers assume and what communities actually need is frequently the source of buildings that are technically compliant but functionally abandoned. The method itself has a strong evidence base in the academic literature on post-occupancy performance and in practice through organisations like CABE and various community land trusts. The limitation here is that the record provides no specifics: no account of how findings were translated into design decisions, no post-occupancy survey showing whether the outcomes matched the intentions, and no description of workshop structure or participation rates that would allow another team to replicate it. For a specifier evaluating this on a live project, the honest question is not whether participatory design works in principle but whether the time, facilitation cost and potential brief-inflation risk can be properly budgeted and managed alongside a standard design programme.
