Varied timber boarding tuned to control room acoustics.

Ceiling and balcony surfaces are lined with sandblasted Douglas fir and dark-stained chestnut boards whose varied sizes are set to absorb, reflect or transmit sound and shape the room's acoustic. Using the finish itself as the acoustic instrument avoids separate engineered panels. The method delivers warmth, clarity and resonance in a small opera house.

Using varied sizes of natural timber boards — here sandblasted Douglas fir and dark-stained chestnut — as the primary acoustic control layer in a performance space exploits the differential absorption, reflection and diffusion properties of textured wood surfaces, treating the finish itself as an engineered acoustic element rather than hiding engineered panels behind a decorative layer. This is a legitimate approach with precedent in concert hall and chamber music venue design, and it produces an integrated aesthetic where the visible material is doing real work. The challenge is that acoustic tuning of this kind is inherently project-specific: the board sizes, spacing, surface texture and room geometry are tuned together for a particular volume, programme and reverberation target, so the design is not directly transferable — a specifier cannot copy the detail without rerunning the acoustic simulation for their room. Evidence on this record is claimed only, with no post-occupancy acoustic measurement or audience or performer feedback, so whether the stated design intent — warmth, clarity and resonance — has been achieved in practice is unverified.
