Salvaged urban tree CLT feedstock aggregation and routing to existing mass timber manufacturers.
Cambium Carbon collects arborist wood from urban tree removals (36M trees/yr currently wasted), grades and processes it into structural-grade feedstock (Carbon Smart Wood), then supplies it to established CLT manufacturers (Vaagen, Mercer, SmartLam, Sterling). Cambium Carbon collects arborist wood from urban tree removals — a stream estimated at 36 million trees per year currently ending as chipping or landfill — grades and processes it into structural-grade feedstock they call Carbon Smart Wood, and supplies it to established CLT manufacturers including Vaagen, Mercer, SmartLam and Sterling, avoiding the need for new mill infrastructure. The logic of leveraging existing CLT capacity while diverting a local waste stream is sound, and the geographic distribution of urban trees creates a potential for regionally-sourced timber supply that conventional forestry cannot easily match. The evidence position limits how far this can be carried in specification: as of May 2026 there are no structural certifications, no independent lifecycle assessments, no project completions, and no long-term durability data for salvaged urban wood in CLT panels — a feedstock with inherently variable species mix, moisture history, and potential contamination from nails or soil that requires more rigorous grading than plantation timber. The supply model's viability depends entirely on CLT manufacturer adoption, and scale-up stalls if partners find sourcing economics unfavorable or material consistency insufficient for their production lines; US mass timber market adoption is also still maturing, which affects the demand-side trajectory on which the whole model depends. Worth raising with clients who have locally-sourced or waste-diversion requirements in their material brief; wait for structural certification and independent LCA before committing to it as a project specification.
Series A funding ($18.5M, Feb 2025) and manufacturing partnerships are documented. However: (1) no EPD, third-party LCA, or peer-reviewed carbon sequestration validation found; (2) no APA or ICC CLT certifications cited in public materials; (3) no end-use project case studies, delivery volumes, or structural performance data disclosed; (4) carbon claim (~1 tonne CO2/m³) relies on standard wood-as-carbon-storage accounting but is not independently verified; (5) sourcing consistency, moisture/grading standards, and supply reliability unvalidated; (6) urban tree wood quality variability (age, decay, contamination, knot density) not addressed in available materials.
