The gallery is lit from above through rooflights and a semi-translucent GRP screen that softens and evens the daylight to protect artworks. Diffuse toplight gives gentle, consistent illumination without direct sun. The arrangement reduces reliance on artificial gallery lighting.

Rooflight-plus-diffuser is the canonical solution to the gallery lighting problem: artworks need consistent, glare-free illumination without UV or direct solar gain, and a semi-translucent GRP or similar screen interposed between the rooflight and the gallery ceiling achieves that by spreading and softening the light while cutting direct beam penetration. The approach has a long history in gallery design — from Kahn's Kimbell to many UK regional galleries — and is the industry standard for permanent collection spaces with conservation requirements. Its value here is the reduction in artificial lighting load and the quality of viewing experience that diffuse daylight provides compared to even well-designed electric lighting. The limitations are equally well known: the screen must be sized and specified to manage solar gain in summer as well as diffuse in winter, and the rooflight and screen system requires a maintenance access strategy that is often under-planned. This record carries only claimed evidence, which is not unusual for an applied technique at a single building, but a specifier should note that the performance of any specific GRP screen depends on its thickness, translucency grade and the rooflight geometry above it — these details require coordination between the lighting consultant, building services engineer and facade specialist, not just a product selection.
