Carbon Cell produces rigid black foam for thermal and acoustic insulation by combining agricultural biochar with bio-based polymers. It addresses the embodied carbon and end-of-life waste of conventional petrochemical foams (EPS/XPS) by substituting compostable bio-inputs and claims carbon-negative production through biochar's inherent carbon sequestration. Carbon Cell replaces petrochemical feedstock in rigid foam insulation with agricultural biochar and bio-based polymers, targeting the embodied carbon and end-of-life waste profile of EPS and XPS. The carbon-negative claim rests on biochar's inherent carbon sequestration, and dual thermal-acoustic performance in a single board is a genuine specification simplification. The product is pre-commercial with a £1.2m pre-seed raise, and that stage reflects the actual data position: no verified thermal conductivity or compressive strength, no LCA or EPD, and no pilot building data exist. The carbon-negative claim cannot be independently verified because full lifecycle accounting — including bio-polymer production, transport and processing losses — has not been published. The most serious unresolved issue for a construction specifier is fire: reaction-to-fire behaviour has not been characterised, biochar may alter the flame spread and smoke toxicity profile relative to conventional foams, and this is a regulatory hurdle with no published pathway. End-of-life compostability is conditional on industrial composting infrastructure that most construction waste streams do not access, so that benefit may not materialise in practice. Worth monitoring as an alternative insulation material, but it needs fire testing, an EPD and at minimum one monitored building installation before it belongs on a materials shortlist.
