Holcim UK's biochar-amended concrete addresses embodied carbon in structural concrete by sequestering biogenic carbon from waste feedstocks during production. Feedstock variability is also a practical constraint — coffee grounds and coppiced wood differ significantly in moisture content and carbon density, and reproducible supply at volume is unconfirmed. A specifier considering this product for a net-zero concrete specification should treat it as a well-evidenced trial on a credible pathway, not a certified product, and wait for EPD publication before it becomes a committed design assumption.

The methodology relies on full biogenic carbon crediting at A1–A3, which EN 15804+A2 treats as a separately reported indicator rather than a net-zero offset. Long-term durability, permanence of carbon storage over building life, and end-of-life fate remain unstudied. Two-year monitoring is underway but results not yet public. Earlier formulation cited at 69 kgCO₂e/m³ (80% vs CEM I), suggesting variability and optimization still in progress.
