Designing a building's material flows explicitly for end-of-life recovery — each of the 1,268 cork blocks tracked as either a technical or biological nutrient, recoverable without contamination — takes circular economy principles from policy language into a specific construction decision: dry jointing, no adhesives, no composite bonding. The value is that the building functions as a material bank rather than future demolition waste, and the claim is coherent given the actual construction method used. What this record does not provide is evidence of recovery actually happening, or of the economic viability of that recovery at end of life: cork block disassembly and reprocessing is a plausible pathway, but who funds and operates it, across what timeframe, under what conditions, is unresolved. The broader principle — that disassembly must be designed in at the start, and that it requires dry joints and pure materials — is transferable to any bio-based construction using the right connection strategy. Specifiers considering this approach should also examine whether the building consent and structural warranty framework on their project allows a material system that has no long-term performance record.
