Plant-based fabric stores more carbon than build emits.

Because its plant-based components lock up more atmospheric carbon than the construction emitted, the house is carbon-negative at completion. Specifying high-biogenic-content materials turns the fabric into a carbon sink. It demonstrates buildings can store rather than release carbon.

The claim that a building is carbon-negative at completion rests on biogenic carbon accounting: plant-based materials such as cork, timber and hemp lock up atmospheric CO2 during growth and that stored carbon is counted against the emissions of manufacturing and construction. If the accounting methodology is sound and the biogenic storage is not reversed within the building's lifespan, the arithmetic can work. The practical uncertainty is in the accounting: biogenic carbon treatment varies significantly between Life Cycle Assessment frameworks (EN 15978, PAS 2080, the GLA's approach) and some — including the current UK standard — require biogenic storage to be reported separately rather than offset against process emissions. The evidence in this record is claimed only, with no third-party LCA, and without knowing which framework was applied and whether it has been independently verified, the carbon-negative headline cannot be relied upon in a formal submission. For a specifier seeking to demonstrate a net carbon outcome on a project, the method is credible in principle but the accountancy must be made transparent, the material sourcing verified as genuinely sustainable, and the storage duration defended — a structure designed for fifty years should not claim biogenic offset for a material that might degrade or be released sooner.
