Built-in EMI and infrasound shielding for sensitive rooms.
Selected suites incorporate electromagnetic interference and infrasound shielding so that external electrical noise and low-frequency sound do not corrupt measurements. Designing the shielding into the fabric of specific rooms keeps the rest of the building conventional and lower cost. It allows a single building to host both ultra-sensitive and ordinary research.
Embedding electromagnetic interference and infrasound shielding into selected suites at the fabric level — rather than applying it as a retrofit or relying on equipment-level filtering — is an economically rational approach for a mixed-use research facility where only certain instruments require that level of environmental control. The principle is that shielding a defined zone at construction is cheaper and more effective than treating the whole building, and that concentrating cost on the suites that need it avoids penalising the wider facility budget. The engineering interdependency to resolve is that both EMI and infrasound shielding interact with the fabric, structural and HVAC design in ways that can propagate coordination issues if the shielding requirements are introduced late — penetrations for services, for example, are potential shield compromises if not detailed carefully, and vibration isolation in the structure must not inadvertently create paths that shortcut the infrasound attenuation. The record carries no evidence data, so the achieved shielding performance is claimed rather than measured, and without test results from the completed suites it is not possible to confirm whether the fabric-integrated approach reached the isolation levels the instruments require. For a specifier planning a precision science facility, commissioning shielding effectiveness tests to a defined standard — such as IEEE 299 for EMI — should be a handover condition, not an assumption.
