Lightweight fabric ducts and air socks distribute supply air over large volumes with low installed weight and even, draught-free throw, and can be packed and reused between fairs. They suit a structure that must be erected and struck quickly.
Fabric ducts and air socks are a mature alternative to sheet metal distribution in large-volume spaces — exhibition halls, sports arenas, temporary event structures — and their use in commercial and event fit-outs is well documented enough that manufacturers publish extensive performance and pressure-drop data. They distribute air through the full length of the textile via micro-perforations and seam openings, producing a low-velocity diffuse throw with minimal draughts that suits occupied spaces below the duct run, and the installed weight is a fraction of equivalent metal. The record shows claimed evidence only, but this is a widely deployed product category rather than an experimental approach. The practical qualifications are real: fabric duct cleanliness requires periodic laundering, which means specifying removable attachment systems and a maintenance protocol from the outset; perforated-zone throw patterns are harder to model precisely than a fixed diffuser; and the low weight that makes them attractive for temporary structures also means they move in high-velocity airstreams, which needs to be managed with tension anchors. For a touring or demountable application the pack-and-reuse case is persuasive — they fold small, travel well and reinstall without specialist tooling — provided the attachment points at each venue are standardised.
