Biochar-amended structural concrete offsetting embodied carbon through waste-derived biogenic sequestration.
Holcim UK and Canary Wharf Group have incorporated biochar (from coppiced wood and spent coffee grounds) into ready-mix concrete for structural applications. The product addresses the AEC sector's embodied carbon challenge by replacing a portion of conventional binder or aggregate with waste-feedstock biochar, which sequesters biogenic carbon over the concrete lifecycle. The decisive caveat is that no certified EPD has been published and the monitoring results are pending — the −14 kgCO₂e/m³ claim rests on methodological assumptions about biogenic carbon permanence and accounting that have not yet survived EN 15804 harmonisation scrutiny. Biochar feedstock variability between coppiced timber and spent coffee grounds will affect both carbon accounting and concrete consistency, and neither is yet fully characterised across the two trials. Long-term concrete durability and structural performance data are absent; the carbon benefit assumes the concrete lasts as designed, and that assumption needs decades to validate. For a project pursuing embodied-carbon targets and willing to commit alongside an active monitoring programme, this is one of the more serious industry trials currently in progress — but a specifier should wait for the Arup/QUB results before treating the net-negative claim as bankable.
