Custom glass with amorphous silicon photovoltaic cells acts as both shading/enclosure and electricity generator in the dining veranda. Integrating PV into translucent glazing generates power while providing shade and admitting diffuse daylight.

Amorphous silicon thin-film cells integrated into translucent glazing panels generate electricity while admitting diffuse daylight and providing shade — a genuine multi-function proposition for canopies, verandas and atria where opaque PV panels would block the space. The technology has been commercially available for over two decades and is well-understood in performance terms: amorphous silicon captures a broader spectral range than crystalline silicon (it performs better in diffuse and low-angle light) but delivers lower peak efficiency, typically 6–9% compared with 18–22% for standard crystalline panels. This record is claimed only with no tracked evidence, and the specific generation figures for this installation are unverified. The value in a hot-humid climate application — where the primary aim is shading and the electricity generation is a secondary benefit — is more defensible than in contexts where maximum generation per square metre is the objective. The practical risk is cost: BIPV glazing carries a significant premium over standard PV, and the economics depend heavily on whether the glazing would have been required anyway for enclosure or shading; if the veranda would otherwise be open, the comparison is against shade structure plus separate PV, not standard glazing.
